Lisa Ditelfsen (ehm me) interview on SearchCowboys

At SMX London a few weeks back I was interviewed by the lovely Bas van den Beld from the relatively new blog called Search Cowboys. This blog was only launched 3 weeks ago but is already producing fantastic blog content as well as video interviews and more. Well, you wouldn't really expect anything less with the likes of geniuses like Joost de Valk on board.

It was a really fun interview, Bas is a great interviewer and it was easy talking to him. In fact it was so easy to talk to him that the interview lasted for nearly 20 minutes. Yes that's right, nothing can really shut me up when it comes to Search.

It is a bit on the long side, which is totally my fault. Even when Bas asked me to "sum up something in 2 sentences" I kept on blabbering on.

Anyway, here it is! Thanks Bas and SearchCowboys for listening to my ramblings, I enjoyed the chat!

SEO Wars - Planet Link Space

We have finally got around to making the sequel to our brilliant/ridiculous series of SEO Wars.   This episode is called "SEO Wars - Planet Link Space" and is about the discovery of an amazing new planet called "Link Space". From this newly discovered planet you can see the link paths that both SEO jedis and the "evil" SEOiths have taken.

Rand LinkWalker and Princess Jane are admiring their discovery of this planet when Darth Cloakmaster suddenly appears, not being best pleased about his link paths being seen by others....what will happen?

In this episode Base One had the pleasure of a guest star; Jane (Copland). As Jane was staying with me over the period of SMX London we managed to force....ehm I mean convince Jane to join us in the filming. And since Jane is such a cool SEO Chick she agreed. We had so much fun filming this, hope you enjoy the randomness, if not, at least it made us laugh =)

Rand LinkWalker = Rand Fishkin (if you didn't guess)
Princess Jane = Jane Copland (oh and actually Jane's voice, in fact it was her idea that Princess Jane strips...hmmmm...)
Darth Cloakmaster = Dave Naylor (and fear not, we got Dave's permission although I'm not sure he agreed to the ridiculous Yorkshire accent Beccy puts on!)

SEO Wars - Planet Link Space

Disclaimer: This production is made by the Base One Search team and not Base One designers which means the quality of the sound, picture etc is not super. But we kind of like this proper home made movie feel. It must also be warned that this movie is VERY random, if you are likely to be offended by randomness don't watch this!

New Team Member - Mathias Ahlgren

Base One Search has extended it's Search Team family with another talented Search "geek", welcome to Mathias Ahlgren!

Mathias is originally from Sweden (can you belive it? The Norwegian has hired a Swede, it's Eurovision all over again!), has lived in Australia for 3 1/2 years and came to the UK in August this year with his lovely Australian wife (yeah sorry girls he's taken). Mathias has a strong background in online marketing and developed a keen interest for search engine marketing through his big passion for domaining (parking/selling and buying domains). He is also super positive and excited about Search, which is a must in this industry.

Although Mathias has only been with Base One for a week and a half, he is already contributing to the team and not only learning but also sharing his knowledge. In fact, you will see his first blogpost on B Search blog here very very soon!! (in about 10 min once I have posted this lol)

Again a very welcome to Mathias (pronounced mateeas), let's rock the SERPs!

SMX London & LondonSEO Party

Next week Search Marketing Expo (SMX) is in town, Sam was writing about the importance of attending these type of conferences earlier this week and I totally agree. When I first started out in the industry the likes of SES (Search Engine Strategies) and SMX (Search Marketing Expo) taught me a lot and also opened up the chance for me to network with like-minded people. In fact I attend the first ever SMX conference in Seattle 2 years ago as one of my first conferences. I had the best time, both from a learning and networking perspective. And I'm honored to now be speaking at SMX.

SMXUKSpeakerb.jpg

This year I'm speaking on the panel: "European Search Marketing Challenges" along with one of my fellow
SEO Chicks, Judith Lewis. Having run pan European and International search campaigns (both Paid and SEO) I think I have been through my fair share of challenges targeting multiple countries. I'm speaking on this panel on Tuesday 4th of November at 1 o'clock for anyone that is interested in hearing me speak.

In addition to the SMX conference, LondonSEO.org is also organising a FREE networking party on the evening of the 4th November. If you can't make it to the conference I really recommend you drop by the Freemasons Arms pub in Covent Garden and enjoy a beer and some networking with fellow search marketeers. The entire Base One Search team is planning to!

A Search Engine Fairytale

Once upon a time, in cyber space, a lone spiderSEspider.jpgcrawled the world wide web. It crawled the web in order to find the most relevant content to feed to the enormous and  knowledge hungry  Googlesaurus. The gigantic Googlesaurus was getting more and more picky about the web pages it would eat, if it wasn't exactly to the Googlesaurus taste he would simply spit it out to its supplementary index, where it was lost forever.

The people who wrote the website content, needed the little spider to find their web pages.  And more importantly;  needed the spider to feed the content to the Googlesaurus . The struggle to know exactly what the Googlesaurus wanted from day to day got harder and harder.

But there were chosen once, looming in the darkness,  who understood the Googlesaurus.  The chosen ones had the capability of miraculously knowing what the Googlesaurus wanted, and needed to get bigger and stronger. These chosen ones were called:

SEO Wars - Empire Googletron

As Base One Search website has finally launched, we decided to do something special. We  created this fantastic/or ridiculous, (not so) short movie called SEO Wars (I think someone used the name SEO Wars before and I'm hoping they won't get too pissed off with us).

We spent many hours, reharsing, directing and editing this movie.....ehm ok, maybe not. To be honest it was the best team bonding ever, as all we did was laugh and giggle of our own stupidity. We also showed a sneak preview of the SEO Wars movie at the last LondonSEO party last month and it was very well recieved. Although to be fair, everyone was pretty much boozed up so that might be why they were so content watching this movie. We are hoping to do a whole series of these SEO Wars movies, well that's if anyone thinks they are even slightly amusing. Heck we'll do them anyway, Julie at SEO-Chicks will laugh.

The movie is set in.....ehm....Cyber Space, and starrs:

Rand Fishkin  as Rand LinkWalker
Fantomaster as Darth Cloakmaster
Greg Jarbo as SEOda
and Matt Cutts as the Googlesaurus

Enjoy fellow SEO Jedis and SEO Siths =)

Drumroll.........Far far away in the cyber galaxy........................

What is SEO anyway?

You have no idea how many times I get asked this, and the different ways I have tried to explain what it is and why it is so important. In fact in some cases I've just given up, my mum for example; she still thinks I work for Google.

I'm kind of worried people think it's just some buzz word, like "Web 2.0", which by the way in my opinion is a word that is a bit like an unidentifiable decease, like colic or IBS, you can just imagine your doctor saying "I'm sorry Sir, you have Web 2.0". Back to the point, SEO is NOT a buzz word, it's not something you possibly should do to be keeping with the Joneses. No, no, no sir! If you are serious about your online presence SEO isn't something you should consider it's something you should most definitely do.

Ok before you think I have totally lost my marbles and I get lost in a tangent, let me start with the basics, defining SEO:

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation and is where you adapt and moderate a website specifically so that it is indexed and ranks highly within a search engine's organic (free) listings. See below for where the organic listings are.

Organicyahoo.jpg

To optimise (modify) your website to get traffic through the search engines (mostly Google as they own over 80% of the UK search engine market share) you need to know a lot about how the search engines work and more importantly how the search engines algorithm (the mathematical equation) determines which web page is more important than another. Now I'm not going to go into details on these techniques in this post, as that's a totally different tangent. But bottom line is you need to hire a SEO Agency (or consultant) OR invest in substantial amount of time and effort learning this discipline yourself.

But WHY should you do SEO?
In essence, by ranking highly in the SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages) for keywords that are relevant to your business, you will get relevant and targeted traffic. Optimising your website for search engines is the simplest and most powerful way to reach an audience that is actively looking for your product or service. Now this is a really important part, yes they are already LOOKING for your product or service by searching through the search engines for keywords that describes YOUR business. How's that for already doing half the sales job!

Some stats:

•    80% of Web users visit a search engine every day
•    Search is responsible for 49% of online purchases
•    In B2B, 93.2% of customers use the internet to research a purchase or service

Why you need to rank Highly!!
Saying all this it's worth knowing that just being listed in the search engines is NOT enough, if you are position 56 on Google for a chosen keyword you are not likely to get any traffic. Why? If you think about it, when you use the search engines yourself, how often do you go past the first page of Google when you have done a search? Exactly, you are probably more likely to change your search query/keyword before you venture to that horrible "next page" button. Who has the time, right? Here's some stats on exactly that:

•    93% of users won't go past the first page
•    Less than 1% goes beyond 2nd page of a search
•    The top 3 positions receive 80% of the clicks

Here's a diagram from a company called Enquiro about the click distribution of the organic search engine listings:

OrganicClickDistribution.jpg

To put this in perspective, let's imagine you want to rank for the keyword "digital agency" which has an approximate Google search volume of 6600 per month (trust me, I've checked my super dooper SEO tools). Now if you are listed #1 position in the Google organic results this means that you will receive approximately 3828 visitors a month for this keyword alone! YIHA! BUT if you are listed on the third page you might, just might get around 30 visits. Now that's a BIG difference.

Who thinks SEO is a buzz word now ;)
