Links vs Content - The Debate Continues.

I am not going to patronise anyone in this post by saying it is obvious that you need both quality content and links in order to survive the search engines....... The debate here at Base One is between me and a co-worker over what is MORE important as we realise the significance of both for ranking purposes.

The Background

The co-worker  is a link building machine - he could be considered an Arnold Schwarzenegger of the link building world, except his phrase is not "I will be back", it is more like "I am not going anywhere"....

Me?  Well my strengths lie more in on- page optimisation. This major difference is perhaps where this year- long debate has stemmed from...........

 The Arguments

For Content: Whilst acknowledging the co-worker's argument, and the importance of links towards any search marketing effort, I remain in favour of quality, keyword rich content as the more significant element. I am debating for the user whilst the co worker is debating for the search engines. In my opinion, the ultimate objective for any website is to gain user intrigue, navigate throughout the site and hopefully get them to convert.

A website can have a million quality links but, if it has poor or limited content, that is not relevant to the search, it is likely that any user will instantly bounce off the website. What will gain conversions, links or content? And if this is, after all, the objective, should there not then be more importance placed on quality content rather than links? Without great content, link building can prove difficult.....particularly when approaching high authority websites. People are more likely to link to strong, well optimised content with relevance to their own website. Be it a product or a service, quality and interesting content more often than not will have people blogging about it or linking their own websites naturally to yours.

For Links: Without links there is little or no chance of ranking on the first page for any competitive terms. They are vital to off-page optimisation in allowing a website to be found and potentially gain a high volume of traffic. If using logos as links on relevant websites then this also increases online brand awareness, as users will start to recognise the brand. Referring traffic or even direct traffic can increase with this type of link building.

Closing Statement

I put this question to you......User or search engine? Good content MORE important than links? I ask you this: can you, the user, live in a world where websites are revolved around the number of links they have and the importance that Google has placed on these sites, or do you want to create a society where the content is interesting and relevant to your search?

"Let us not despair...

And so, even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream, that one day content will reign over the link weight in the Google algorithm, that content will be able to walk the worldwide web with heads held high.... "

VOTE CONTENT!!!!!

lol, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sam? Really? http://www.baseonesearch.co.uk/sammurray/

Funny how the argument for links is so much shorter lol. The only problem with Google putting more emphasis on content than it already does is it would be too many sites being equal. Before Google figures out a way of measuring intent the algorithm has to have a big emphasis on links as it's harder to build links than to spam content. Too much content, and especially keyword optimised content can hurt the user experience. In fact I truly believe that it does, quite often you can see that a site has been search engine optimised by the over use of keywords in title/h1/alt 20 times in the main content in every internal anchor text going to the page etc. The border between optimised and spamming is soo thin when it comes to content. But I still totally agree that without a keyword strategy and optimised content it doesn't matter how many links you have!!

Good blogpost Bex.

Firstly I must say that I am glad all the work I put in at the gym has finally paid off and for you to finally recognise me as the muscle bound hunk that I am!

I cant believe that I am sitting in Thailand and felt the need to reply to this debate. There was never a real debate, I understand and accept that content converts visitors into customers yet I put forward the importance that should be placed on obtaining high quality links in order to generate as many relevant and targeted visitors as possible. Through many different sources I may add all of which are within different stages of the decision making process and interested in the product/service before finding the website *Exhales.

Additionally (blah blah word for you there lisa!)i cant believe i have posted on a blog without using the name tag to obtain a link back to a site!

Frodo (a tanned version) x

aw we miss you Sam and your random rants. Can't believe you replied from Thailand, you are a true SEO geek! I like it =)

ps: "additionally" doesn't qualify as a bla bla word..you can do better than that. Has the sun affected your ability to converse in a blah blah manner Mr.Murray?

Thanks for replying from all the way over the otherside of the world!!! I know it must have been hard to find the internet there......like a homing device with you!! Does your argument still stand that links are MORE important overall? Just intrigued.

I love these kinds of posts.
My favorite quote is, "Without links there is little or no chance of ranking on the first page for any competitive terms."

Perhaps you should've had my face on the image saying, links links links:-)

Content is the winner. Without decent content you are just Google Bombing. But good content will still gain you longtail traffic.

Content wins... Links definitely help, but then again good content will automatically gain links? Right? :)

im sorry but content wins the battle, links are great but really i just focus on a few key links that are proven performers and focus on content...

without content you are just another site that goes up in SERPs quick and down even faster

would love to be better with links, or on a beach drinking beer in thailand, but until indian firms stop spamming cheap links, ill focus on content...

Thank you for your comment Dave.

I completely agree. ALthough we all realise the importance of links it seems that content wins hands down..... Google always prides themselves on ensuring a good user experience and delivering relevant websites to search ratio. Any yet, it seems that with links being such a major factor in the ranking algorithm, more and more websites are ranked in the top positions with poor or irrelevant content. If websites have to compete for top positions based on the relevance of content, is this such a bad thing? NO SPAMMING ALLOWED!!

Although it does seem like both content and links are important, I would have agree with content more. It is true that more links will get you ranked higher in the SERPs, and that will bring more traffic to your site. But if you have poor content on that site, then the bounce rate will be very significant. However, if you have quality content, then the traffic (definitely less than a site w/ more links) will be more interested in the content and in the end more likely to come back and convert. With good content, you will have more people coming back for more and in time gain that high ranking the way you would with a lot of links. My two cents..
